Salt Writing

Prewriting skills are fundamental skills children need to develop before they are able to write ✍️. These skills contribute to the child’s ability to hold and use a pencil, and the ability to draw, write, copy, and color. 🧠 A major component of the pre-writing skills are pre-writing marks and shapes.

These marks and shapes are the following:

Vertical lines (ages 2-3)

horizontal lines (ages 2-3)

circles (ages 2-3)

cross shape, like a t (ages 3.5-4)

square (age 4)

diagonal lines (age 4.5)

X shape (age 5)

Triangle (age 5)

I DO NOT recommend sitting and drilling toddles on creating these shapes and marks… rather spend time together coloring, drawing, and making marks in different sensory materials like SALT! 🤗

How to color salt:

In a bowl add ½ a cup of salt.

Add 5 drops of liquid food coloring and mix with a spoon until color is distributed.

I got impatient and used my fingers to mix the food coloring and got great results. 🙌🏼

To provide a little instruction I created mark cards for Maeve to copy. She loved the challenge! We made lines, shapes, and a few letters that she knows well. G just enjoyed making circles and lines!
