Did I tell you that I have a Masters Degree in K-12 Literacy? š Literacy is a passion of mine. ā¤ļø š Do you read to your child everyday? Does your child have access to a variety of texts? š¤
Reading to your child every day and providing them with a variety of text will encourage their love of booksā¦.This is important for school success because EVENTUALLY they move from learning to read, to reading to learn. š
Fictional Texts š : this is the most common for young children. I would guess that your home is full of fictional texts for your little one.
Non-Fiction š : These are texts that are so important! We find most of our collection at the local library and @scholastic. NF text builds and expands a child's vocabulary, teachers children about the world they live in, and sparks their curiosity!
Greeting Cards š: Donāt toss the cards you receive right away! This is a form of literature! Put it on their bookshelf or in their bookbox!
Poetry/Nursery Rhymes š : Nursery rhymes are important for young children because they help develop an ear for our language. Both rhyme and rhythm help kids hear the sounds and syllables in words, which helps kids learn to read!
Magazines š°: Offering your kids access to magazines at home is not only a novel way to get them to read, but it also exposes them to a variety of text as well. Also, magazines offer short articles with lots of visual support from pictures and aren't as intimidating as books for struggling readers. If you donāt want to subscribe, you can also check your local library. Our local library has SO MANY magazine subscriptions you can check out.
Digital Literacy š§āš»: This is quite possibly their future. While a nice book in their hand is ideal, there is more and more digital literacy in our classrooms. We used @Epic4Kids multiples times a week. Check them out!
Comics/Wordless Picture Books š¦øāāļø : Children get to learn a lot from comic books as this can boost their imagination. They begin to visualize the movement of characters as they go through the story.
Books on Tape/CD šæ : This is a fun way that your children can āreadā independently. We slowly grew our book on tape collection with Scholastic. Great prices!
