There is nothing worse than that moment when you turn around and your child, who was just there, is gone. š Your heart stops. Whether you are in a grocery store, your driveway, or an amusement park, itās a terrible feeling. šš¼šš¼ā
ā
What I did not realize prior to kids is that toddler are notorious for not responding when you start yelling ā______ where are you?!ā š¤·š»āāļø And then when you find them and they are just standing thereā¦. Ugh! Why didnāt they respond? š¤Øā
ā
I still donāt know exactly why they don't respond š but I do know how we can teach them to respond. šš»āāļøā
ā
Once Maeve started walking, I started working on the skill of responding to āMaeve, where are you?ā ā
ā
šHere is how it goes: ā
Practice in your home when it is not a panicked situation. Start with the toddler in the same room as you but maybe not in clear sight. I would start saying āMaeve, where are you?ā At the beginning she didnāt respond so I had to prompt her to say āhereā or āmamaā. Maeve couldnāt exactly say āhereā but it was close enough. ā
Once the child responds, make sure you give them SO MUCH PRAISE! Give them hugs, kisses, claps, etc. šš¼šš¼ššā
ā
Continuum: ā¬ļøā
-first start by practicing in the house (a controlled setting) ā
-then practice in the house but from separate roomsā
-then practice outside in the yard ā
-then practice outside when you are out of sight ā
-then practice in a storeā
-then practice in a store where you know where they areā¦. Maybe you are around the corner or around the clothes rack ā
ā
ššThe goal is to practice as much as possible when it is NOT a frantic situation with the goal that when it IS a frantic situation they will respond. ā
